Near Petersburg 1850-1873 Yalta, Crimea

Before he came under the tutelage of the well known Russian landscape painter I.I. Shishkin, Fedor Aleksandrovich Vasiliev studied for four years, from 1863 to 1867, at the Drawing School of the Society for Encouraging Artists, located in Petersburg. After that he worked independently, painting and drawing landscapes. Vasiliev lived in Petersburg until mid-1871, when he moved to Yalta for reasons of health. He was a notable practitioner of Russian realist painting.

His friend and teacher, the artist I. N. Kramskoi, wrote, "I believe that he was destined to bring into the Russian landscape that which the latter lacked:... the poetic sense of nature.'
